What Michael Karl McNeil Does Now

Michael Karl McNeil is the principal of McNeil Safety Consulting, an independent environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, and forensic and expert consulting practice he has run since 2005. Its office is in San Gabriel, California. He does the work himself. Nothing is subcontracted.

The work

Air and noise monitoring. Written safety programs. Hazardous materials management and business plans. Stormwater plans and inspections. Incident and exposure investigation. Technical support for attorneys, which means site inspection, findings reports and testimony. Clients come from construction, manufacturing, healthcare, film and television, and energy.

Where

California and twelve other Western states. That reach is a product of the fire service: federal assignments put him to work under other states’ rules for years before he consulted under them.

What carried over from the fire service

A prevention officer’s working day is spent comparing what a code requires with what is actually in front of him, and then putting the difference in writing. Industrial hygiene asks for the same discipline with different instruments: a sampling pump in place of a plan check, an exposure limit in place of a fire code section. The hazardous materials cleanup, signage and training work he did in federal fire is the direct ancestor of the hazard communication and hazardous materials work he does for employers now.

Writing

He is a contributor to the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and a reviewer for the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. His regulatory articles are published on the McNeil Safety Consulting blog.
